Lookadah Olympian

Spotted in Vancouver recently was Doctor Adrian Lorde, (above) sports medicine man for Barbados athletes and teams. He was attending a symposium on Anti-doping and its related sciences being held in Vancouver, BC.
I managed to catch Adrian in between activities, a boat cruise and a luncheon, and spent an afternoon with him. We enjoyed some cuckoo and salmon, Bajan style, and discussed his high profile, high travel sporting activity. i was shocked to hear the amount of travelling Adrian does. He says he is lucky to be home for six months straight. On the brighter side, he goes to all the world sports events, like the olympics and world championships, where ever they are held.
Adrian will be back for the 2010 winter Para-Olympics here in Vancouver and we look forward to seeing him again.

BC Seniors FYI
RE: SENIORS’ OUTREACH SUPPORT (SOS) Imagine arriving in a country where you are not too familiar with the language and customs and have few friends or acquaintances. How do you get around and find out where to find your own foodstuffs, clothing, cosmetics, newspapers and other goods from your home country? The Centre of Integration (CIAI) was recently funded by the Federal Government under the New Horizons for Seniors initiative for a new program (Seniors’ Outreach Program-SOS) for persons age 55 and over who are living in New Westminster and the surrounding areas. The SOS Project will bring together people age 55 plus to be involved in social activities, educational workshops and outings. Our goal is to provide a venue for creating new friendships and to reduce the social isolation which presently exists in our community of lack of information. We are inviting men and women from the African/ black community who are over the age of 55 to become involved in this project. Each participant will be paired with a volunteer who would act as a support/helper. The volunteer would be required to assist the participant for about 2 hours per week. Where do you go to get information about government programs, schools, courses, churches, choirs, and your rights as a senior or resident? How do you apply for health care, pensions, housing, bus passes; or what do you do when you apply for a benefit and it is denied? Do you know how or where to get help to appeal such a decision? The SOS Program is here to meet that need. .

Re the above.
Well I paid a visit to the centre to see the seniors hobbling around in their walkers and wheelchairs and such. Alit from my motorcycle and walked in the door. Man was I shocked. Not a walker or wheelchair in sight. Instead, I saw youthful men and women, some with grey hair and some with no hair at all, grooving to the rhythms of the drum, singing and enjoying themselves to the max. Quite a lot of BCABC members were taking part.
Organisers, Patricia Whittaker and Fay Salmon directed this program of seniors self-help and resource centre open to all from the community. I am still impresed and now found a new place where the hip all hang out. On thursday nights this is the place to be.
